What does a termite mound in Australia have to do with the production of oil and gas?

The article by Peter Miller in the July, 2007, edition of National Georgraphic on Swarm Theory pointed out that a single ant or bee or termite is not intelligent, but their colonies are.  It went on to say that the study of this so called swarm intelligence is providing insights that can help us understand and manage very coomplex systems from trucking to shipping to robotics - and for that matter to oil and gas production.  The concept that simple creatures following simple rules, each one acting on local information, can accom- plish complex tasks and produce virtual intelligence is very powerful.
